The Dangers of Prioritizing Children and Family Before Your Husband

ree

In many marriages, it is easy for wives to unintentionally put children or extended family above their husbands. While caring for children and family is a noble and God-given responsibility, prioritizing them over the marital bond can quietly weaken the foundation of the home.

The Bible is clear that marriage is meant to reflect Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:22–33). A husband and wife are called to become “one flesh” (Genesis 2:24), which means the marriage relationship must come first after God. When children or other family members are consistently placed above the husband, several dangers can arise:

1. Erosion of Emotional Intimacy

When a husband feels secondary, resentment may grow, creating emotional distance. The bond between spouses weakens, leaving the marriage vulnerable.

2. Unbalanced Family Dynamics

Children thrive when they see their parents united. When the marriage is neglected, children may grow up with confusion about roles, priorities, and healthy relationship models.

3. Leaving Room for Division

Satan seeks to divide marriages (John 10:10). Misplaced priorities give him a foothold. A wife’s well-intentioned but unbalanced focus can unintentionally open the door for strife and disunity.

Instead, Scripture calls wives to honor and respect their husbands (Ephesians 5:33), while husbands sacrificially love their wives. This mutual devotion ensures that the marriage remains the central pillar of the home. Children are then raised from the overflow of a strong, Christ-centered union.

In practice:

Spend intentional time with your husband, not just the children.

Make major decisions together as a couple.

Set healthy boundaries with extended family.

A strong marriage doesn’t neglect children or family—it blesses them. When wives (and husbands) place God first and each other second, every other relationship falls beautifully into place.
